Courtyard Residence on Del Monte
2015 John Staub Award, ICAA Texas
Mature live oaks stand tall along the edge of the courtyard gardens that are the heart of this house. Conforming in scale and character to the street, the house blends in so well it could almost be missed.
Spanish Colonial details and a material palette of stucco, clay tile roof, and wrought iron are a natural fit to Houston and the subtropical vegetation of the site. On a relatively small lot, the house makes use of every inch, expanding the livable space with an internal courtyard and brick paved porticos. By virtue of the courtyard and gardens also designed by Curtis & Windham, the house makes a public gesture to the street while maintaining privacy inside.
