Rocking K Ranch
Central Montana
When our client brought us on to renovate and revitalize this long-established five-thousand acre cattle ranch in western Montana, their grand objective was to restore a plethora of natural habitats of elk and other wildlife found among the ranches many foothills and waterways. In keeping with this goal of resoration, our client wished to preserve the ranch’s hardy, turn-of-the-century character with its many small, discrete buildings and its expectation of rustic, outdoor living. We were happy to comply. The resulting project placed emphasis on renovating five of the original eighteen structures, with great care to be given to creating an interconnected fabric of green space that would unite the heart of the ranch and connect it back to the native landscape. The designs that followed were rugged and romantic, full of forthright simplicity.
“Rocking K thrived on intentional planning and a highly limited local language of materials, which, when handled thoughtfully, made the ranch feel absolutely heroic, as it was always meant to.”
